Mr Bonner served as Head from 1970 to 2002, a remarkable period of leadership during which the school flourished and grew in both size and reputation. Generations of pupils, parents and staff remember him as a constant and reassuring presence at the heart of school life — a figure whose high standards were matched by fairness, warmth and a deep commitment to every child in his care.

As Emma Beer, Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning) and a former pupil, reflects:

“He was such a constant, reassuring presence whose standards were high, but whose expectations always felt fair. He was Lady Barn — everything revolved around him and he was loved by all the pupils and their parents. He made learning fun!”

Years later, returning to the school as a member of staff, Emma came to appreciate more fully the depth of his devotion and vision. She recalls how he guided Lady Barn through periods of change and challenge with steadiness and clarity, always focused on what was best for the children. The confident, thriving community we see today reflects, in many ways, the foundations he helped to establish.

Central to Mr Bonner’s leadership was a strong sense of family ethos. He spoke often about belonging — about being a “Lady Barner” — and ensured that every child, parent and member of staff felt part of something larger than themselves. This spirit of unity was lived daily in the way he celebrated successes, supported those around him and fostered loyalty and pride within the school community.

During his long headship, Mr Bonner also oversaw important developments in the life of the school, including the commissioning of the gymnasium in the early 1970s, reflecting his belief in a well-rounded education that balanced academic learning with wider opportunities for growth.

His legacy continues to be felt throughout Lady Barn House School today. The strength, confidence and sense of community that define the school owe much to the integrity, passion and unwavering belief in its potential that characterised his leadership.

As Emma reflects:

“To have known him first as a pupil and later as a colleague has been a privilege, and his legacy is woven into the very fabric of the Lady Barn House School we know today… Mr Bonner, or Ted as he was known, will forever be a true Lady Barn Legend.”

We are immensely grateful for Mr Bonner’s devoted service and the profound influence he had on generations of Lady Barn pupils and families. He will be remembered with great respect, affection and appreciation by all who knew him.

Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Mr Bonner’s family and friends at this time.
